Hardcover book with printed cover and brown cloth spine. Covers are heavily worn with much of the printing rubbed off. Covers also have a good amount of surface dirt from age and storage.

Full title is “FIRST BOOK IN COMPOSITION, APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF GRAMMAR TO THE ART OF COMPOSING: ALSO GIVING FULL DIRECTIONS FOR PUNCTUATION, ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR SOUTHERN SCHOOLS.” The work is by L. Branson, A.M. and published by Branson, Farrar & Co. Raleigh, North Carolina in 1863.

Book meas. approx. 5.00 x 7.75 inches and runs 140 pages.

Overall condition is fair to good. Front has some period ink scribbling. Inside front cover is a childish drawing of a horse and in several places in a child’s scrawl is “THIS HORSE IS TO YEARS OLD THIS SPRING.” There is also ink scribbles and the name “JAMES.” Lower left corner has a period book label that reads “SOUTHERN BOOK EXCHANGE M. M. SMITH, HISTORY AND RARE BOOK, RALEIGH, N.C.” The opposite blank page also has ink scribbles and dots. Written in period ink across from the title page is “RALEIGH, NC.” and “JONES.”

Interior pages have aged but are still tightly bound. Front hinge is getting weak.  [ad][ph:L]
