These small prayer books were printed and handed out to new soldiers by various religious and charitable groups and are typical of the items found in a soldier’s personal effects. This one has the simple, matter-of-fact title, “THE SOLDIER’S PRAYER BOOK” printed on the pasteboard front cover and a patriotic and somewhat threatening looking eagle with raised wings, arrows and olive branch on a United States shield on the back cover. This 64-pages long, printed in Philadelphia by the Protestant Episcopal Book Society and bears a printed testimonial by Bishop Alonzo Potter dated June 1861. As is typical, this is pocket sized so the soldier could have it with him always. The cover shows some losses, stains, a missing lower right corner and a crack in middle with signs of an attempted tape repair on the reverse, but the title is all there on the cover, the text block is complete, and the condition rather conveys the book was actually carried in the pocket by a soldier, making it a nice addition to a display illustrating a typical Civil War soldier’s personal items.
