Few of New York’s first two-year enlistment regiments have written histories. But the 27th New York had Henry W, Slocum as it’s first colonel, who lead them to First Bull Run where the regiment was severely engaged, where 27 were killed, 44 wounded, and 60 missing (many of those wounded to die in southern prisons). The author himself, Sgt. Charles B. Fairchild of Co.D, would be hit in the battle and taken prisoner, not released until May of 1862. Known as the “Union Regiment”, it was composed of companies from upstate western New York and mustered in Elmira July 9th, 1861.

Civil War Books calls this history “an excellent source”. Based on Fairchild’s war-time diary of services in the 1st Division of the Sixth Corps. The 27th would participate in the 1862 Peninsular Campaign, suffering heavy losses as described at Gaines Mill and Malvern Hill, and later at Antietam and Fredericksburg. With much of the flavor of the early war years, it includes many detailed soldier’s letters home exhibiting the patriotic spirit and beliefs of the times, as well as describing soldiers’ life in camp and on campaign.

This particular copy was first owned by the 27th Major, Curtiss Crane Gardiner, and bears his personal inscription to his sister as well as his business card from St. Louis, Missouri, where he had set up an insurance agency in 1873. Gardiner received a shell wound at Gaines Mill, June 27th, 1862. On account of continued disability from the service, he resigned his commission July 24th, 1862. He was subsequently breveted Colonel of US Volunteers for his “gallant and meritorious services.”   [cla][PH:L]
