This uncommon title was first published in 1829 by the Department of War for the express purpose of unifying the training of the varied militia units in state service across the country. This example was published in 1858 by Moss & Brother of Philadelphia, by the original authorization of Congress.

The cover is a light blue cloth with embossed boards.  Scattered fading and light surface wear is noted. Gold gilded text at the top of the spine reads “INFANTRY TACTICS”.  Some wear is noted along the edges, but primarily at either edge of the spine itself. Some foxing is observed, but binding remains tight and pages are crisp and complete.  The first flyleaf is inscribed in pencil with an illegible name but the words and date “in the year of our Lord, 1861”. A separate, oxidized inked signature reads “Mr. C. Payne”, and a stamp at upper right reads “EDWARD McDOWELL / BOOKSELLER / FREDERICKSBURG VA.”  Edward McDowell started selling books in the Fredericksburg, VA area in the mid-1840’s and continued through the Civil War. Dimensions are 4.75” x 7.6”.

An uncommon book with antebellum and wartime pedigree.  Ideal for the tactical student of the Civil War era or the collector of fine, period books.  [cm][ph:L]
