This quite uncommon book details the regulations for the New York State Militia forces as per the Adjutant General of the State of New York, John Sprague. The regulations were submitted and ratified in 1862, and published in this volume by Comstock and Cassidy of Albany for the use of officers starting in 1863.  This copy features a copy of an 1864-dated general order from Sprague just after the title page.  New York sent more men to the Union armies during the Civil War than any other state, and their comprehensive laws – passed in 1862 – set a standard for the National Guard and streamlined their state volunteer military program.

The cover is marbled paper with a leather spine and corner binding.  Some cracking of the spine is noted, but it does remain solid.  Cover boards are secure, with much use evident.  The flyleaf pages are missing but appear to have been carefully cut out long ago.  Page edges are ink speckle finished, and foxing is only noted across the first 5 pages.  All are crisp and in good condition. Dimensions are 4.9” x 7.75”.

A rare and important wartime publication.  Ideal for the collector of fine books or primary information.  [cm][ph:L]
