Title: Nolan's System for Training Cavalry Horses

Author: Kenner Garrard (Captain, Fifth Cavalry, U.S.A.)

Publisher: D. Van Nostrand, 192 Broadway, New York, 1862

First edition. 12mo. Original red cloth, decoratively blind-stamped borders and corner ornaments, front board with a handsome gilt-stamped vignette of a mounted cavalryman; spine lettered in gilt "Nolan on Cavalry Horses / Garrard / Van Nostrand." Stereotyped and printed by C. A. Alvord. Preface dated West Point, October 1st, 1861.

A Civil War–era American cavalry manual, adapted by Garrard from the work of Captain S. E. Nolan, 15th Hussars (British Army), itself founded on the equitation principles of the French master Monsieur Baucher. Nolan's original being out of print, Garrard prepared this edition to preserve the system for U.S. service, adding chapters on "Rarey's Method of Taming Horses" and on "Horse-Shoeing."

Illustrated throughout with beautifully executed plates depicting the horse and mounted soldier in the various positions, movements, and figures of the training system, alongside fine diagrammatic plates of the school figures and gaits (walk, canter, speed). The plates are credited to the skill and kindness of Captain W. H. Bell, 3d Infantry, and lend the manual both instructional clarity and considerable charm.

Condition: Good only / fair. Binding sound but well-worn: spine and board edges darkened and heavily water-stained/soiled, with loss to the cloth at the spine ends; gilt on the front vignette rubbed but legible. Internally, title and text leaves with scattered foxing and damp-staining to lower margins; a working copy of an uncommon title.

A scarce 1862 imprint of interest for Civil War, cavalry, and equestrian collections.  [ss] [ph:L]
