CIVIL WAR GUTTA PERCHA INKWELL WITH INITIALS

$75.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-2743

This is a Civil War-era gutta percha inkwell. It has a screw-off top, has an oval-shaped body, and measures approximately 2” high. Very good condition with no cracks or breaks. There are initials on both sides: “WHW” and “WHHW”.

In the mid-19th century, gutta-percha (hard rubber) became very popular. For the Civil War soldier, this was a great improvement over the usual glass inkwells – they closed tightly and there was no worrying of the glass breaking. [jet] [ph:L]
