This American bar bottle stands 10 ½” tall with a polished pontil. This bar bottle could have been made in any of the bottle houses at that time. It was blown in a 12 rib mold and is not a machine pressed bottle. Bar bottles, which are thought to be a uniquely American form, were used in taverns and hotels from 1820 until prohibition in 1920. When prohibition ended in 1833, a law was passed requiring liquor to be labeled and served in the original manufacturer’s bottle, making bar bottles obsolete. Early bar bottles had a cork closure and used a metal pouring device. They did not have glass stoppers, like decanters.  [lj/ld][ph:L]
