3 1/4" tumbler engraved with the farmer's arms and the motto "Speed the Plough". This English tumbler dating from 1815-1830, has a polished pontil and was probably made for the American market. It was a toasting glass for a successful harvest.  When purchased, it was personalized with initials on the back that are difficult to decipher - JHC perhaps?  Besides the farmer's arms, the tumbler has hops and barley engraved on the sides.  Due to its small size, this additional engraving signifies that the glass was intended for hopped whiskey or malt liquor, rather than traditional beer or ale.  [LJ][ph:L]
