Heavy middle period cut decanter, original stopper, 10 5/8" tall (including stopper) with a star cut pontil, probably English 1840-1870. Pieces from the middle period of cut glass were decorated with simple designs such as the wide cut panels found on this bottle.  The cut lines delineating the panels extend into the foot creating a star pattern that decorates the polished pontil area.  The original stopper in this bottle is also cut with the same star pattern.  I am attributing this decanter to England because of the shape of the stopper, which is not typically found on American glass; it is slightly lighter in weight than its American counterparts;  and the star on the bottom.  Pontils on American decanters from this period were usually polished without a star.  The decanter was once part of the historic Wiseburg Tavern collection in Parkton, MD owned by Marion V.
