This is a US cavalry officer’s coat button as worn on their uniforms during the Civil War. The brass device is a convex shaped, 2-pc button that measures 20mm, and retains its original gold gilt finish, some discoloration around the C. Block letter “C” is seen within the eagle’s shield device on the button face.
On reverse is the backmark that reads “SCOVILLE MFG CO/ WATERBURY, CT.” Founded in 1802 the Scoville Manufacturing Company specialized in buttons and sewing hardware, and is still in production today. The shank is bent to one side, intact, is strong and tight. [MC] [ph:L]
