Offered here is a fine, non-dug coat button from Rhode Island. According to Tice’s reference book "Uniform Buttons Of The United States 1776-1865”,  “The City of Providence organized this group in 1801 to improve citizens in the military arts. It was made up of seafaring men, with officers of the Providence Marine Society.”

The device consists of a cannon at the center of a lined field, with initials, "PMCA" above, with the date, "1801" below. Gilt face, straight shank. Backmark reads: “R & W: ROBINSON * EXTRA RICH *” with two inner rings and one outer ring.
