Troiani is arguably the best military artist around and has been for decades, uniquely combining artistic talent and historical accuracy from in-depth, impeccable research. He has also been one of the few artists to really hold the line on limited edition prints of his work, passing up the chance to extend an edition or reissue popular works.

This is a professionally framed, signed and numbered portrait of a Confederate drummer in the field, waiting along the embankment of a sunken road while his officers are organizing the men in an adjacent field and a comrade crouch low next to him to light a pipe before orders are given to again fall in. The artist shows the drummer with his snare drum thrown over his shoulder, but with drumsticks out, anticipating new orders. He wears a butternut gray cap, pants, and jacket, the latter trimmed at collar and cuff with the light blue indicating infantry service and looking just a little bit nattier than his rifle-carrying comrades, though with similar signs of field use. Over his shoulder he carries the blanket roll favored by veteran troops in the field and at his hip is a tin mess cup and a classic Confederate cedar wood canteen.

The print is in excellent condition, with great colors, archivally framed in birdseye maple wood frame measuring 27 ¼” x 37 ½” and triple matted in red, blue, and a butternut gray reflecting the color of the drummer’s uniform. Troiani’s signature is at lower right and the print number in series of just 625 is at the lower left. This is ready to hang.  [sr] [ph:L]
