This is an original 1861 dated $2.00 note from the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Rail Road Company. The central image on this note is a steam engine pulling box cars. At the top right is the printed date of November 16th 1861. The note is correctly hand signed and numbered (#9082) in red ink.

Of special interest is the paper upon which this printed. At the time, paper was a true commodity and could be expensive. So, many bank notes of this era are found printed on the back of previously printed sheets of paper. The sheets were usually rotated 90 degrees so not to have the new and old bills facing the same way thus causing major problems. Here you see that it was previously used to print notes for a bank in Mississippi.

The note is in lightly circulated condition. The overall size of the note measures approximately 6 1/8” by 2 ¾”. Both sides of the bill are clean and retain very strong detail.  [jet] [ph:L]
