DESCRIPTION: An unissued and unused Confederate States of America $1,000 bond certificate, authorized under the Act of Congress of February 20, 1863, and dated at Richmond. The seven percent loan bond features an engraved central vignette portrait of Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson flanked by ornate denomination panels, with a smaller vignette of a side-wheel steamboat at the base. The bond was lithographed by Archer & Daly of Richmond, Virginia (Criswell #122, Ball #241).

CONDITION: Unused example — no serial number entered, no manuscript signatures, and the treasury seal/registration lines left blank. All eleven attached $35 interest coupons remain intact and uncancelled along the lower register, a notable point of distinction, as most surviving examples of this popular type were issued and bear at least one clipped coupon. Sheet measures approximately 14" x 17". Some old tape residue/staining is present along the upper and lower edges; light overall toning and handling wear consistent with age. Mounting evidence on reverse at four corners; those areas are reinforced with acid free tape.

COMMENTS: This is among the most recognizable and collected of all Confederate war bonds, prized for its bold Jackson portrait — issued just months before the general's death from friendly fire at Chancellorsville in May 1863. An unused example with a full, uncancelled coupon panel is scarcer than the typically encountered issued and partially-clipped specimens.  [ss][ph:L]
