Muster roll lists 79 soldiers. Remarks section: “This company was last mustered for pay at Gunpowder River Md, by Lieut. Col. John D. MacGregor, Oct. 31st, 1861.” Ink notation: “Muster Pay Rolls, Co. J, 4th NY Vols.” Signed by “1st Lieut. Joseph E. Thornton, Commanding Company, and by inspecting officer, Captain John S. Downs.
The 4th New York Volunteers were a two year regiment mustered in New York City, May 1861. They were engaged with three major battles while attached the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 2nd Corps—Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. During service they lost 64 men killed and mortally wounded and 24 by disease for a total of 88.
