Patriotic songs such as this became very popular during the Civil War. This song sheet was published in 1861 by H. M. Higgins. Words and music by Henry Clay Work.
First verse of song reads, “Heavily falls the rain, Wild are the breezes tonight, But ‘neath the roof, the hours as they fly, Are happy and calm, and bright. Gathering round our fireside, Tho’ it be summer time, We sit and talk of brothers abroad For getting the midnight chime. Brave boys are they, gone at their countrys call, And yet and yet we cannot forget, that many boys must fall.” Four verses total.
Measures 10” x 13”. Six pages. Yellowing has occurred, with areas of spotting. Pages are tightly stitched together. Shows chipping at left margin and top of back cover. [sl] [ph:L]
