In this two-page note, Vice President Hamlin and famed Maine congressman (later 1884 Republican presidential nominee) James Blaine recommend the placement of the Rev. S.B. Macomber as a regimental chaplain.
Hamlin Text: “To whom it may concern”
“This note will introduce Rev. S.B. Macomber. He is now a private Co. “H” 13 Me. Reg. in which he enlisted for patriotic motive. He is a graduate of Waterville College Me. He would like or I am sure he should have the place of Chaplain of some Reg. I commend him to the Cols. Of all Regiments for that place, and will cheerfully endeavor to see their recommendations if made carried into effect / H. Hamlin / Wash. Dec. 21, 1864”
Blaine Text (page 2):
“House Reps: / 5th Feby 1865
I cheerfully concur in what Vice President says in regard to Rev. Macomber and any Regt who may secure his service will have a faithful and devoted Chaplain. / J. G. Blaine”
