Preprinted document filled out in period ink. Document meas. approx. 8.00 x 10.00 inches and is in good condition.

The document states that on March 31, 1865 at Camp Holly, Virginia Colonel Patterson commanding the 2nd New Hampshire Volunteers issued the following items

1 Springfield Rifle Cal. 58

2 Two cartridge boxes Cal. 58

2 cartridge box belts

1 gun sling

2 waist belts

2 waist belt plates

1 ball screw

6 screw drivers and cone wrenches

6 wipers

500 ball cartridges Cal. 574

1 packing box

All items were issued to Lieutenant James I. Locke commanding Company K, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry and the document is signed by Locke at bottom.

James Irving Locke was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on December 28, 1839. He enlisted as a private in Company K, 2nd New Hampshire on May 21, 1861. He was promoted corporal July 15, 1862, sergeant April 15, 1863, 1st sergeant July 15, 1863 and received a commission as 1st lieutenant on June 24, 1864 and was finally made captain on April 1, 1865.

The 2nd New Hampshire fought at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Drewry’s Bluff and Cold Harbor. In the latter battle Locke was wounded to an undetermined degree. The regiment also served through the Petersburg Campaign. From his obituary Locke was present for all of his regiments engagements.

After the war he lived in Michigan for a time but returned home to New Hampshire. He was an active member of the GAR and a Mason. He died in Portsmouth on November 22, 1916 and is buried in Exeter Cemetery in Exeter, New Hampshire.     [ad] [ph:L]
