Dated “War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, January 7, 1865.” One page, 5” x 7. Exhibits slight wrinkling, w/one inch vertical tear on upper margin. Else VG.
This order details the dismissal of General Butler following his botched assault on Ft. Fisher at Wilmington, NC, in late December 1864. Text:
1…By direction of the President of the United States, Major General B.F. Butler is relieved from command of the Department of North Carolina and Virginia. Lieutenant General Grant will designate an officer to take this command temporarily.
II...Major General Butler, on being relieved, will repair to Lowell, Massachusetts, and report by letter to the Adjutant General of the Army.
BY ORDER OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR: W.A. Nichols.
Ben Butler was one perhaps the most notoriously controversial Union General of the American Civil War. His final relief by U.S. Grant following his abysmal performance at Ft. Fisher was a relief for all.
Excellent collectible. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
