Dated May 9, 1865, at Danville, VA, this an original parole signed by Lt. Col. Stephen C. Fletcher of the 1st Maine Veteran Volunteers, serving as U.S. Provost Martial for the city of Danville, made out for an “H.C. Fair” of “Young’s Batry,” allowing him to pass US guards and patrols on his way home to Halifax County, VA. This fits Young’s Battery of Virginia, which was also known as the Halifax Artillery. They served first as Company G of the 14th Virginia, but converted to artillery on May 1, 1862, serving with the 1st VA Battalion of Artillery and then as Company C of the1st VA Regiment of Artillery until January 1865 when they became an independent battery. They saw service in Moseley’s and J.G. Blount’s artillery battalions, fought at Chaffin’s Bluff in Fall 1863 and later at Drewry’s Bluff at Bermuda Hundred in defending Petersburg.
We have not been able to satisfactorily identify Fair, even allowing for a misreading of his initials or variant spellings of his last name. It is possible the soldier simply made up an alias to use with Federal authorities, out of spite if nothing else, but we as yet see no likely candidates in the rosters. The document itself is in very good condition with only minor folds and stains, and may yield its secrets to further research. [sr][ph:L]
