DESCRIPTION: Partly-printed "Statement of Volunteer" enlistment document, completed in manuscript for Henry McCoy, who enlisted as a new recruit on March 9, 1864, and was mustered into the 1st New York Cavalry. Standard recruiting form recording the volunteer's personal particulars and the terms of his bounty.
TRANSCRIPTION:
STATEMENT OF VOLUNTEER
Date: March 9, 1864
Name: Henry McCoy
Residence: 78 Oliver St[reet]
Age: 29
Occupation: Seaman
Where Born: Ireland
Whether New Recruit or Veteran Soldier: New Recruit Examining Surgeon: H.L. Loomis [surname hedged, script difficult] Mustering Officer: Capt. J.B. Benson [hedged, script difficult] County Bounty Paid: Three Hundred Dollars [signed] Henry (his X mark) McCoy
HISTORICAL NOTES: McCoy's occupation as a seaman and Irish birth are consistent with the heavy recruitment of immigrant laborers and mariners into New York cavalry regiments during the later war years, when a $300 county bounty was a significant financial incentive. McCoy signed with his mark rather than a signature, suggesting he was illiterate or unable to write — a detail that adds texture to an otherwise routine enlistment form. Further regimental service details for this soldier have not been verified.
CONDITION:Toning and edge wear consistent with age; docketing/annotations in a later hand at top of sheet. [ss] [ph:L]
