This striking, full-length sketch of two US Civil War veterans shows the men in full Grand Army of the Republic regalia, matching seemingly everything but their ties. An ornate backdrop is incorporated into the sketch and details such as badges, lapel pins, facial features, and hat insignia are clear. The sketch shows nice contrast and little to no notable damage or wear. The frame is original to the period and possibly the sketch. It features an ornate gold border with a 6.6” section of partial damage. The body of the wood frame appears to be oak with a painted layer of faux grain finish – which has since cracked in several areas to reveal the natural grain of the wood beneath and offer a nice, antique appearance.
The backing is a thin, period appropriate wood panel, held in place by finishing nails over a layer of heavy stock and the artwork itself. Glass is clear and free of major defects and damage. Overall measurements are 21” x 25.25”.
A very nice piece from the post-war era – or the rest of their lives after the great cataclysm. This work is deserving of a place among any collection and is ready to display beautifully. [cm][ph:L]
