This plaster relief of Benjamin Butler once likely adorned the lobby wall of a Soldiers Home, as Butler served for fifteen years in executive positions of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, including as its president from 1866 through 1879.  Though scarce, another known example once hung in a Soldiers Home in Portland, Maine and it’s reasonable to assume these pieces were commissioned in honor of Butler’s service to the organization and veterans’ affairs after his tenure as President.

The piece is made entirely of plaster, with a flat faux mounting surface (painted black) and an aged-finish, bust-view relief of Butler. Condition is quite good, with only a small spot of wear on the relief and a slight chip at the upper left corner. Butler’s name and “Lowell, Mass” are written in pencil on the underside of the relief and on the concave obverse – either in recognition of his place of residence or the sculptor’s location. Dimensions are 17.1” x 12.9”

Not only a detailed art piece, but a remnant of the important work done for our servicemen after the Civil War.  [cm][ph:L]

Additional shipping charge likely required.
