A lively original watercolor of a camp dance among Union Zouaves, executed in a bold, naive hand and signed at lower right "Wm. H. Monk" in red-brown ink.

The scene is set before a row of canvas wedge tents under a pale, washed sky. At left a young fiddler in a forage cap bows away while a dancer in a full, flaring blue garment swings past. Beside them a Zouave in red trousers and a kepi with red band kicks high, one arm flung out. At center a mustached Zouave in fez and tassel, short blue jacket open over a tan vest trimmed in red, oval US plate at the waist, sets one hand on his hip and raises the other overhead. At right a bearded Zouave in a fez catches a grinning soldier in forage cap and blue jacket in a rough bear hug and hoists him off his feet; red chevrons show on a sleeve in the pair. The Zouaves wear full red pantaloons with buff leggings over black shoes.

The heavy ink outline, flat strong color and dry-brushed hatching of the ground place the work firmly in the folk tradition, and the artist clearly took pleasure in the high spirits of the moment. Uniform details are rendered with evident familiarity. The artist has not been identified, and the date of execution is not established; the painting may be a wartime sketch or a later recollection of camp life.

Watercolor and ink on thin card. Approx. 10 1/4 x 12 in. Unframed.

CONDITION:  Chipping and small losses along the edges, most pronounced at the lower margin and the upper right corner. A surface crack runs through the sky at top. Scattered foxing specks, light surface abrasion and minor pigment loss in places. The image and signature remain strong and legible.    [ss][ph:L]
