Thomas Cartwright began his volunteer career as a private in May of 1861, and climbed to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant by November and 1st Lieutenant by February of 1862. June proved to be a fateful month for Thomas, who was slightly wounded at Big Bethel and grievously wounded at Gaines Mill roughly a year later. During what was assumed to be his slow but progressing recovery, he was promoted to Captain and transferred from Company G to Company D. Unfortunately, his wounding would prove too severe and he died in a hospital in DC on December 26th, 1862.
This commission certificate appoints Thomas to the rank of “Ensign” or 2nd Lieutenant and is effectively dated November 4th, 1861 and affirmed on December 12th. It is unfolded and displayed in a double-fronted frame. Some material loss is noted along the top edge and all folds are held together by transparent tape. Some light staining is noted in localized areas and a thin band of light discoloration is noted at the bottom edge.
Overall, a neat and haunting link to the famous 5th New York Zouaves. Ideal for display among any Civil War ephemera collection. [cm] [ph:L]
