Dated “December 10, 1863 / Long Island, Boston Harbor.” Signed by “John W. Trafton / Capt. Commanding of Vols.” 2 pp. in ink on lined paper, 4.5” x 8. Exhibits fold-marks, else VG.

Text: “List of Mass. Vols. Colored, turned over to Lt. Dean, Dec. 10, 1863.

Robert Rawlins 54th Infantry /John Henderson (?) 54th Infantry.”

Robert Rollings [not Rawlins] was a 35-year-old Andover farmer who mustered as a Private into Co. “A”, 54th Mass,11/28/ 1863, and was mustered out, 8/20/ 1865 at Boston Harbor.

John Henderson was a 23-year-old cook who mustered as a private into Co. “D”, 54th Mass. Infantry, 12/9/1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Olustee, FL, and was discharged for wounds, 12/5/1864, at Beaufort, S.C.

Lieut. John Milton Deane was a 24-year-old Freetown, MA, teacher who was commissioned as Lieut. into “G”, 29th Mass Infantry, 6/1/1861. He was promoted to Captain, 6/8/1864, and received the Medal of Honor for action at Ft. Stedman, 3/25/1865, as well as promotion to Major, 5/15/1865.

Fine “recruit” memento of the black regiment, commanded by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, renowned for its valorous attack on Fort Wagner, July 18, 1863. In protective sleeve.  [JP] [ph:L]
