Dated “Central Agency, 244 F Street / Washington, DC., July 16th 1864.”  Pre-printed form. One page. Exhibits slight soiling, else VG & entirely legible.

Text:

“Sir: The information is communicated to us from Col. College Hospital at Washington that Mr. Samuel Sherman a Private of Co. B, 124th Reg. N.Y. Vols died at that Hospital, on the 19th day of May 1864, and that you are his nearest friend. It is supposed there is a Bounty and Arrears of Pay due some one on his account. If you will inform this office whether he leaves a widow of children, and if not, a father or mother, and if not, brothers or sister, and their Post Office Address, we will forward them the proper blanks for making their claims, with instructions for executing the same, and, if returned to us, the claim will be prosecuted to the final issue, WITHOUT ANY CHARGE FOR SERVICES,  and as speedily as can be done by any agency in the land. Please be particular in giving names and Post Office Address, to be accurate, and write plain, so there shall be no mistakes. It is desirable that prompt attention be given to this matter. / Respectfully yours / Darius Forbes / Gen. Agent U.S. San. Com. Claim Agency.”

Samuel Sherman, age 23, enlisted as a private and was enlisted and mustered into Co. B, 124th New York, Infantry. Sherman died of his wounds at Washington, DC on 5/19/64. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  [jp/LD][ph:L]
