Front cover features a dramatic full-page illustration by William Waud: “Major-General Butler After the Battle of September 29, 1864.” Interior illustrations include full page sketches of “Grant’s Campaign—The Battle At Chapin’s Farm, September 29, 1864.”, “The Rebel Assault and Attempt to Recapture Fort Harrison, September 30, 1861.” Also the “Charge of the Fifth Corps On the Rebel –Redoubt At Peebles’s Farm, September 30, 1864,” plus “Sheridan’s Army On The March Up the Shenandoah Valley.”
