The New South was a Union occupation newspaper that began publishing at Port Royal, SC, following the Union capture of Port Royal Sound by the Union fleet of General Samuel Du Pont, November 7, 1861. Operated by Union post-master John H. Sears, issued in a military command, addressed mostly to Union soldiers, its readership was not entirely military. For Union newspapers round the North the paper provided a reliable source of news and Union troop movements the South Carolina field of action. The New South continued during the beginning of Reconstruction, publishing 64 issues, in all, probably through 1867, though its last discovered issue dates from Sept. 29, 1866.

This issue features numerous new items, beginning with a front page piece castigating Union “Deserters” & “Stragglers,” and calling for more and more disciplined “File Closers.” Also—“The Removal of McClellan”—which, while taking note of the general’s organizational abilities, also notes that “Having failed to fulfill all the bright hopes entertained of him, the time has come when his firmest friends—without abating a jot of their confidence or esteem—can yield to what must appear to every patriot [beginning with A. Lincoln] the best interests of the Country.”

Also articles on a “Deserter to be Shot” (Private W.W. Lunt of the 9th Maine, who deserted from Fernandina, FL], and the “Disappearance of  Yellow Fever.” Plus “News from the North, brought by the steamer “Delaware.”

A unique and important South Carolina Union occupation newspaper. In protective sheath, w/white card backing.  [jp][ph:L]
