Dated July 4th 1868. Issued to former Private Oshea Bussell, Co. “F”, 20th Maine Infantry. 16” x 12, matted in beige, in brown period wooden frame, 19.5 x 15.5,” w/ paper backing and hang-wire. Certificate text is light faded. Joshua Chamberlain’s is big and bold. Also signed by Adj. Gen. John C. Caldwell, who commanded 1st Division of the II Corps in the fighting in The Wheatfield at Gettysburg.
Oshea Russell enlisted in the 20th Maine in August 1862. He was wounded at Peeble’s Farm, VA., 9/30/1864. Joshua Chamberlain was famed colonel of the 20th Maine, Medal of Honor recipient, and later 5th Corps brigade and division commander.
