First Mortgage Bond, Series "A," No. 322, in the amount of $1,000 payable in gold coin, issued by The New York, Pittsburgh and Chicago Railway Company to Benjamin B. Kirkland and dated July 23, 1881, with a maturity of July 1, 1921. Bears 6% interest payable semiannually via the attached $30 gold coupons, and is secured by a first mortgage on the railroad's property, rolling stock, and franchises, with Henry G. Day named as Trustee and the total authorized issue capped at fifteen million dollars. Handsomely engraved with a vignette of a locomotive emerging from a mountain cut, an ornate green border and counterfoils, and a large attached coupon sheet — 77 of the original 80 gold coupons present (three clipped from the bottom of the sheet). Boldly signed at lower right by James S. Negley as President, with the Treasurer's and Secretary's signatures alongside. The verso carries the bond-holder's redemption-option agreement, signed by F.W. Lockwood and dated October 17, 1882.

Negley (1826-1901) was a Pittsburgh-born Union Major General — a hero of Stones River and the namesake of Nashville's Fort Negley — who later served three terms in Congress before turning to railroading. This was his own line: the company platted and named the town of Negley, Ohio for him in 1883. A scarce and attractive document uniting Civil War, Pennsylvania, and railroad-history interest in a single signed piece. Light toning and archival fold lines commensurate with age; coupon panel largely intact (77 of 80 coupons).  [ss][ph:L]
