Similar bayonets were made for the Model 1860 Spencer Navy rifle and the Sharps & Hankins Navy rifle. They are potentially interchangeable.
In June of 1861 the U.S. Navy placed an order for the Spencer. Only 709 were fitted with a lug for the saber style of bayonet. In July the Navy placed an order for 500 S&H rifles with saber bayonets.
This brass handled saber bayonet measures approximately 24 ¾” long with a 20” long blade. Marked “1861” on the right side of the ricasso and a worn “Collins & Co / Hartford / Conn” on the left side. Stampings show wear. Fuller is nearly 13” long. Blade is dark and spotty with smooth surface.
The hilt is cast brass with very little patina. Marked on the butt of the pommel “62”. The cross guard, ribbed grip, and locking spring in the handle are all in very good condition.
Number 62 of either of these small contracts makes this a scarce bayonet. [jet] [ph:m]
