This accouterment is an original Civil War socket bayonet made by the Collins & Company of Collinsville, CT. The total length of the bayonet is 21” long while the blade itself is approximately 17½” long. This M1855 bayonet was made for the Colt Special Model rifle musket.
Maker’s mark “C & Co” is visible on the socket. A previous collector had circled it with a marker. Bold “US” is on the top flat of the blade (the “S” appears to have been stamped with a broken die). Locking ring and screw are very good. Blade surface is clean but dark and in very good condition.
An original Collins & Company Civil War socket bayonet with its leather scabbard. [jet] [ph:L]
