This bayonet is an original Civil War saber bayonet for a .58 caliber rifle musket made by J. Henry & Sons of Philadelphia. Henry made approximately 600 muskets between 1861 and 1862.
Bayonet measures approximately 25” long overall with a 20” blade. The 5” long all-brass cast hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays a mellow patina. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “14” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is semi-bright with scattered darker spotting. Blade is stamped “1862” on one side of ricasso and “COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / CONN” on the other. Iron “button” and locking spring are in perfect working order.

This musket is stamped “42. VA. REGT. PITTSYLVANIA” on the barrel, was later altered to percussion and then shortened for use in the civilian market. It is a scarce survivor from muskets delivered to Virginia by Jame Swan of Boston in January… (1000-241). Learn More »
