Socket bayonet for a .69 caliber smoothbore musket. The French M1847 was a refinement of their M1822 bayonet. Bayonets of this type were imported to the U.S. during the American Civil War to go with the 140,000 French muskets and Belgian copies purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department.

Bayonet measures approximately 20-3/4" long overall, 2-5/8" long socket, and 18-1/2" long blade. The socket is cut for a bottom stud. The fuller is shallow, as wide as the blade, and squared off where it terminates at the ricasso.  The locking ring has a distinctive profile as it also has a raised bridge. The M1847 also introduced the tapered blade shoulder, which the U.S. adopted for its M1855 bayonet.

There are acceptance and maker markings on both sides of the elbow. There are two stamps on the ricasso. One is a star over "F" and the second is an unrecognizable, deep stamp. An "N" over a "T" is stamped on top of the socket.

Of special interest is a bead sight on top of the socket.

Condition is very good with a pewter-gray color overall. Some very light patches of surface pitting on the blade and there are several dings on the bottom ridge of the blade near the elbow, otherwise nice. Rare to have a sight added to these bayonets.   [jet] [ph:L]
