The Pattern 1876 socket bayonet is five inches longer than the old Pattern 1853 bayonet. The overall length now 25 inches. The cross-sectioned shape of the 1876 was made equiangular, rather than being wider on the top as was the 1853. This bayonet was also referred to as the "Long Common Socket Bayonet". For use with Martini Henry rifle.
Bayonet features clean blade with appropriate English proof marks and dated “89”. Elbow and socket have original blue color with some light surface rust. Locking ring moves freely.
Original brass mounted leather scabbard is also in good condition. Buff leather with brass throat, belt hook, scabbard tip and two rivets. Perhaps two-thirds of the stitching has split along the back edge of the scabbard. Leather remains rigid. [jet] [ph:L]
