The M1855 Joslyn Rifle is a scarce longarm and its saber bayonet equally so. With the rifles manufactured by A.H. Waters and the unmarked bayonets likely acquired from Ames, Flayderman estimated production at just a few hundred. Estimates by other authors vary somewhat, in part skewed by a September 1859 US Navy contract for 500 of the “monkey-tail” breechloaders, but McAulay has pointed out that no deliveries had been made when the war broke out and the sole Navy acquisition was 100 purchased at the end of December 1861 from J.Q. Adams in Washington, which were delivered to the Philadelphia Navy Yard and parceled out to the USS Brooklyn and USS Hartford, backing up Flayderman’s low estimate for production.
This one is in good condition, measuring 26-5/8-inches overall with a 21-3/4-inch blade with unstopped fuller, a ribbed grip brass hilt, with muzzle ring and bottom quillon guard with disk finial intact, and locking spring with button and screw is in place and shows some blue on the side of the spring. As is correct, there are no maker marks. The brass has a medium, aged tone with some dark spots and small dings on the pommel cap and sides of the grip and guard, more on the right than the left. The blade has a good edge and point, smooth metal, showing largely as gray with scattered, thin, darker gray areas. Please see our photos.
This is a scarce bayonet for a scarce rifle, but they did see service: the Hartford listed 12 of them destroyed on the ship in the fighting of April 1862 as Farragut forced his way past the forts Jackson and St. Philip at the mouth of the Mississippi on his way up to New Orleans. [sr][ph:L]
