This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Pattern-1853 Enfield rifle musket. The Enfield bayonet has the distinction of being the first universal issue bayonet to the British Army that employed a locking device. Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it.
This bayonet has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face. This specimen is about 20.5” long overall with a 17.5” long blade and a 3” socket. There are numerous small dings (possibly from being in a vice) on the blade flat and on opposite (bottom) edge. Mixed in among these is a partial marker’s stamp that once read “F. PRESTON / MANCHESTER”. Nearby are inspector’s initials “J.M. Jr.”
Blade is dark gray with darker streaking. The socket and elbow are darker in general from the original bluing. Locking ring is complete with screw.
A fine maker-marked Enfield rifle bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
