This British-made accoutrement is an original saber bayonet made for the Enfield .577 caliber rifle musket.
The bayonet, with its Yataghan-style blade measures 28” long with a 23” blade and has a 15” fuller on each side. Blade is marked with inspector’s initials amid some light pitting at ricasso. Blade bears a good dark gray, almost black tone. Grips are checkered black leather in good condition with light wear on one side and some shrinking. Locking spring still operates.
The black, flat bodied leather scabbard is mounted with original iron throat, “button”, and tip. Leather body is in very good condition. Stitching strong and unbroken. Slightly tight fit on bayonet from leather shrinking over the years.
A nice 1856 pattern Enfield saber bayonet with its original leather scabbard. Recently acquired from the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY. Blue museum sticker with “SHM / E-2” on blade and comes with museum envelope and cards. [jet] [ph:L]
