A no-doubt-about-it Confederate-made socket bayonet for a .58 caliber rifle musket. This measures 13-1/4” overall, with a 2-7/8” socket and 10-1/4” blade and would mount on a top-mounted bayonet stud- typically the base of the front sight. The bridge is intact. The locking ring is missing, but the guide ridges are there as is the stop pin. The bayonet appears to be iron, forged in one piece with a simply bent neck transitioning into an unfluted “three square” blade typical of many CS bayonets. The face of the bore was left relatively unfinished.

This rates good for condition is likely an early battlefield pick-up. The point is good and the edges show just minor losses, but it shows shallow pitting overall, and a mix of gray and dark brown color, with some blackening in places, and thin, light brown surface rust. The bayonet displays very well nonetheless, would make a good addition to a Confederate infantry, edge weapons or bayonet display, well showing crude manufacture by comparison with US examples, but sufficient to create a deadly weapon at close quarters.   [sr][ph:m]
