The item is in very nice condition. Blade has no visible markings. Socket has notched design and appears clean, with a patent stamp reading “PAT. APR. 16 – 72”. Some of the blued finish has worn off the socket while the blade is bright with only light, scattered mottling and a few localized spots of mild pitting. The tip of the socket swivels properly.

The scabbard is made of a tin body covered in reinforced black or brown leather, equipped with a brass tip (chape). Side seams of the scabbard body are tight.  Leather frog with moderate crazing is complete with a circular brass “US” rosette.

Though endorsed by officers like Major Marcus Reno (who noted they would have been invaluable for digging in at the Little Bighorn), regular troops found them top-heavy on rifles and awkward for heavy entrenching.  The concept was eventually abandoned for standard entrenching tools and hunting knives, leaving relatively few surviving original sets.

One of the most distinctive bayonets in US service – essential for any comprehensive or Indian Wars era collection.  [cm] [ph:L]
