It is certain that a quantity of "Modele 1773 Fusil D'Infanterie" were imported into the colonies during the Revolutionary War. This bayonet is in "attic" condition with a heavy patina. The socket is 3 1/2 inches long and has its mortise cut to fit a musket with the lug/sight on top of the barrel. At the rear of the socket a small hole has been expertly drilled and sunken, but for what purpose can only be guessed at. The blade is 12 7/8 inches long with a narrow groove or "blood gutter" running back 5 inches from the tip. There are minor losses on both sides of the blades cutting edges. Reference used to positively identify this fine bayonet was ARMES A FEU FRANCAIS MODELES REGLEMENTAIRES 1717.1836 (Pages 134-135) by Jean Boudriot. A rare bayonet. [pe][ph:L]
