The drawn sword meas. approx. 37.50 inches from point to pommel.

The blade itself meas. approx. 32.00 inches long with a central fuller that is approx. 21.75 inches long. The blade is very nice. It is very bright and mostly clean with only some minor oil residue near the point end of the fuller.

The obverse ricasso has an etched star of David with a stamped brass “PROVED” mark at center. The etching on this side consists of scrollwork ending in a point. This is followed by the etching on the center portion of the blade which begins with two ribands intertwined with two laurel branches. One riband reads “ABYSSINA” and the other “CHINA.” This is surmounted by crossed palm leaves followed by a Sphinx with “EGYPT” below it. Above the Sphinx is a dragon with a riband that reads “CHINA” followed by “XXVI” with the word “CAMERONIAN” in an arc. This is followed by two crossed palm branches and branches of laurel with ribands that read “EGYPT” and “CORUNNA.”

The reverse ricasso is etched with the maker’s name “MEYER & MORTIMER / CONDUIT ST / LONDON” which is followed by a small area of scroll decoration. The central decoration is a Queens crown surmounted by a sunburst. Below the crown in decorative script is “VR.” This central decoration is flanked by scrollwork.

The hilt is of iron and consists of a ribbed handle wrapped in gray sharkskin with seven courses of twist gold wire. Each course has three strands. The sharkskin shows some light surface finish loss at rear of the grip. Wire is complete but darkened with age. Bottom of the grip has a ribbed iron ferrule with an iron backstrap leading to a domed pommel. The knuckle bow divides into four branches with cutouts between each. They come together to form almost a basket like guard with the Light Infantry horn hanging from the Queens crown worked into the cutout are. This is the regimental crest. Guard ends in a turned down quillon. The iron is uncleaned and mostly bright with some light discolorations from age.

Scabbard has been nickeled but is complete with a tired throat, both mounts and rings and the drag. Scabbard is undented but some of the nickel has worn off the drag. Scabbard surface is a bit oily with surface dirt that should clean off some.

The 26th Cameronian Infantry was a regiment of the Scots Army and subsequently a Scottish infantry regiment of the British Army, active from 1689 to 1881. Although the regiment took the name of its first colonel as The Earl of Angus's Regiment, it became popularly known as The Cameronians until 1751, when it was ranked as the 26th Foot. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Volunteers) to form the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1881. The Cameronians were themselves disbanded in 1968.   [sr] [ph:m]
