The weapon is a Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber. Considered a lighter, more maneuverable weapon than its predecessor the Model 1840 “Wristbreaker”.

The blade measures 35” long with a 27” long fuller. The blade is semi-bright with a large amount of darker “finger printing” scattered overall. There are no nicks on the edge. The maker’s mark on the ricasso is to Mansfield & Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island. The opposite side is marked “U.S. / C.E.W. / 1865”. All stampings are clear and strong.

The grip remains in fair condition. Original wire wrap is unbroken and just slightly loose. The leather wrap is complete but has moderate surface wear. The brass, three-branch knuckle guard is complete. “A  13” stamped near the pommel. The brass pieces have a smooth dark patina. The pommel cap and all components remain tightly assembled. Leather washer remains in place.

Metal scabbard is complete with drag, two ring mounts, and throat. Surface is dark brown with traces of old gold paint…common on swords carried by G.A.R. veterans in parades. No dents. Some wear on the bottom edge of drag. Drag also stamped “A  13”.
