Manufactured by Sheble & Fisher, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sabers from this maker were supplied directly to state or militia units and were not Federally inspected. One author notes that the pommels were perfectly functional, but less robustly attached than competing contractors at a similar price point for the time – perhaps a reason for not receiving a contract.
The blade is in good condition. The surface is bright with some light scattered mottling. The edge is good with no major nicks. Has both the wide stopped and narrow unstopped fuller. One side of the ricasso is marked with “SHEBLE & FISHER, PHILADELPHIA.” The original leather washer is present.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap, both in very good condition. The leather is rich and shows very light wear in a few spots, while the twisted wire wrap is completely intact and tight. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard have a nice dark patina and nothing is loose. Hilt has not been cleaned and has a nice untouched look.
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard has a nice patina and is generally smooth, with some oxidation and very subtle pinpoint pitting closer to the drag.
An interesting variant of the M1840 with a state-focused pedigree. It would display very nicely among any collection. [cm][ph:L]
