This is a very impressive naval cutlass and is much heavier that the American cutlass made by Ames.
This piece measures approximately 29” long overall with a 23.25” bolo-shaped blade. The blade features a thick, flat spine which is stamped with: “[crown] / W / 61 / [small crown]” at the guard. The ricasso is marked on one side with “G. GRAH / SOLINGEN” and a large script “G” to the right. The opposite side is stamped “[crown] / P”. The blade wears a dark gray tone. No edge nicks. Original leather washer.
The hilt and basket are constructed of heavy gauge iron with a scalloped quillion at top. The wood grip has a narrow channel running around it that once held a twist of wire in place; the wire wrap is long gone. The full cup basket is heavy, heavier than most we encounter and offered good protection to the user. The guard, hilt, pommel, and grip have most of their original black painted finish.
No scabbard. [jet] [ph:L]
