This steel-hilted saber is the British Pattern1796 light cavalry saber. The Pattern 1796 emerged from the reforming zeal of John Gaspard Le Marchant, a British officer frustrated by the poor quality of British cavalry swordsmanship and equipment. After observing Austrian sabers during campaigns in Europe, Le Marchant collaborated with Birmingham sword-maker Henry Osborn to design a weapon suited to the realities of cavalry combat. The result was a blade optimized for cutting power. Unlike the earlier straight-bladed models, the 1796’s pronounced curve and hatchet point made it devastating in the downward slashing attacks used by light cavalry. It was officially adopted in 1796 and became the standard weapon for British light cavalry through the Napoleonic Wars and beyond. These was very popular in American mounted units from before the War of 1812 right into the 1840s.

The iron hilt has a bird's head pommel and simple reverse P knuckle bow. It is pierced for a saber knot. The grip is covered 100% in dark brown leather. There is no brass binding wire which was the regulation. The metal hilt has a deep brown patina. The blade pad is present, between two shield-shaped languets. The 31-inch-long blade is 1 1/2 inches wide at the hilt. It is bright with minor blemishing and some light pitting near the tip. There is a light but legible incised line engraving on the right side of the blade 3 inches from the hilt that reads: "U.S. 1825"; this is about 1/4 inch tall. The 2-inch-wide iron scabbard fits the sword perfectly. It is heavily patinated and it has no dents.

This sword is the only example with the "U.S. 1825" engraved on it ever observed by this compiler in over 60 years of collecting. It is worthy of the best American martial collection. [pe] [ph:L]
