Classic Civil War cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company. Sword is in overall very good condition. Blade remains bright with no edge nicks. Ricasso is stamped with an off center “AMES MFG / CHICKOPEE / MASS” stamp on one side and “US / DR / 1863” on the other. Original leather washer remains in place.
Brass guard and basket are good with mellow patina. Pommel cap has a small “DR” inspector’s initials on rim. Grip is in good condition with original leather wrap and double-twist of wire.
Scabbard shows light wear with scattered dark spotting and one noticeable dent. Complete with both rings and throat. “DR” inspector’s initials on drag. A very nice specimen. [jet] [ph:L]
