Lock plate is smooth metal showing mottled blues and silver grays with hammer a little crustier showing gray blue and some thin brown with scratches as shown. Inside of lock plate rubbed forward, darker at rear. Internal parts showing some blue. Sharp “US / COLTS PT FA MFG Co/ HARTFORD Ct” stamp forward and crisp 1862 date at rear of lock plate face. Colt delivered 8,005 of the “Special Model 1861” rifle musket in 1862. These locks were a blend of the US M1861 and British Pattern 1853. Amoskeag and Lamson, Goodman and Yale joined in production of the pattern in 1863. For details on these rifle muskets, and changes then made to Springfield patterns see Moller, Vol. 2. [sr][ph:m/L]
